  Prologue

This was going to be her only chance to escape this town and the hidden legacy of alien domination. She was a part-breed like so many others, but she didn’t want to be submerged in the Barrian culture full-on. She wanted out now that it was clear some changes were about to take place with the passage of that bill. The reorganization of the town based on the Barrian culture was already taking place, had begun the night her husband was killed.

There had been no trial or witnesses brought against him or the two lawyers that had been killed along with him. The official word was the men had been sent to a state jail along with the pregnant female accused of killing her own sister.

However, she knew the truth and wasn’t interested in becoming a victim. They were already hard on her tail, having taken her store from her. Her life had been turned upside down and was likely to get worse.

Ashley Beets picked up the pace as she stepped off the beaten path heading for the bluff in Pine Bluff Park. She could almost see over the entire town from there, and beneath the bluff was a series of caves hollowed out by floods ten years ago.

The rustle of leaves behind her jerked her head to the thicket of bushes. A cold shiver ran down her spine as she scanned the area. She took a tentative step and leaves crunched under someone’s foot.

“Who’s out there?” she called boldly despite the tremor starting in her hands. This had been a damned bad idea, but she needed the money to get out of this godforsaken town.

Ashley turned around and let out a harsh breath as a figure strode the short distance toward her. “Why didn’t you answer me?” she demanded sharply.

“Where’s the relic?” her companion asked.

“I’m meeting the buyer,” she said. “I don’t want—”

“He won’t be coming,” he told her. Now hand it over.”

“No.” She glared at her companion. “What did you do, and how did you know I’d arranged to meet someone?”

He shrugged. “I tapped your phone. Anyway, the crystals aren’t for human use.”

“They aren’t for your use either.” She sneered at him. “Your family just wants to take over, but Jarvis will make sure that never happens.”

He chuckled and took another step toward her.

“Back off. I’m not sharing any part of this with you. It’s your fault my husband is dead.”

“I didn’t have anything to do with that. He got stupid and going to the feds wasn’t exactly the best idea.”

“I would say it was,” she snapped. “The damned council is overstepping its bounds, and he knew there wasn’t going to be anyway of stopping what they’re going to do.”

“He was council,” her companion retorted.

“But he wasn’t for what they were trying to do,” Ashley said, shaking her head. “These stones are going to get me out of here before it’s too late.”

“You didn’t know your husband that well,” he murmured. “The bastard didn’t care who he hurt in his quest for money and power. We had no intentions of allowing him to continue to sell off these artifacts any more than I’m going to let you do it,” her unexpected guest retorted. “Those pieces are starting to gain the attention of the federal government.”

She shrugged. “I don’t care how much federal attention this town gets. You can all die here for all I care. You freaks deserve it.”

“You’re as uninspired and ignorant as your husband was.” The voice was low and harsh as a whip. It cut across her senses leaving her feeling chafed. “That attitude is what got him killed and the same will happen to you if you don
’t hand over the stones.”

She laughed nervously. “You can’t be serious. I do have other buyers coming, and they’ll see you if you try to kill me.” She whipped around defiance blazing through her. “Say whatever you want, but these stones are my ticket out of this godforsaken town.”

“Who’s your buyer, Ashley?” he asked softly. “Someone who lives here?”

She had someone in town lined up, but she wasn’t about to tell him who it was. “None of your business,” she said, sneering.

“Too bad.” Her companion’s other hand moved from behind his back, a blade held firmly in his grip. Her eyes widened as the blade crossed the short distance so fast she only had time to open her mouth. No sound came out as her head flew through the air.

  * * * *

He glanced to where her head landed as he used a cloth to wipe the blood from his sword. He sheathed the blade and then went to where the body lay and searched it until he found the small pouch he’d come for.

He opened it and smiled at the small green stones, each in its own compartment. Also in separate compartments was the small collection of silver, star-shaped stones he’d hoped to find at her home but hadn’t been able to. Now he knew why.

He surveyed the ring in the pack. His gaze went back to the coveted frezite. He caressed one of the small green stones through the plastic that contained it.

The frezite was normally not a very dangerous Barrian crystal. On Barria, the stone was used in healing to align electrolytes, jump start a heart in a dying patient, and normalize blood pressure. However, that was in the hands of a professional.

The same stone could also be used for negative effects, like creating weapons of mass destruction, and on this planet such a weapon would affect the magnetic energy, causing pole reversal. The effects would begin to show in frequent earthquakes and wildfires as the stone pulled the heat of the Earth’s core to the surface.

However, they had no plans to use the stones for that kind of weapon. Their plans were deadly, but they wouldn’t affect the magnetic energy in any way.

  “Ashley?”

He folded the leather pouch closed and headed for the trees.

“Ash, come on, stop hiding. I know you’re upset, but I’m here to amend my offer. I’ll give you the money you’re asking for and help you and your daughter get out of town.”

  Would he now?

  “Ashley?”

Two men stepped into the clearing and they both glanced around. One of them spied the body.

“Ashley.” He took off at a run and the other followed on his heels. “Son of a bitch!” he cried and turned his head as he gagged.

  “Shit,” the second breathed.

  * * * *

“Damn it. I didn’t expect anything like this to happen.” Jarvis Carson wiped a hand through his hair while the man with him, Anthony Casey, gagged. Jarvis walked away from the body of the woman who’d been his cousin-in-law.

“W-what are w-we going to do now? Without those stars, we don’t have the weapons we need to use against them. They’ll take control.”

“None of my plans have changed. I’ll just have to go to my secondary source.”

“I don’t know who you’re using, but they’ll die,” Anthony said.

“They’ll be fine,” Jarvis told him firmly. “I set this up so well, no one will ever trace it back to us.”

“But we need it for tomorrow night,” Anthony said urgently.

“We’re still on schedule, but if I don’t win, the feds will be crawling all over this place by noon tomorrow,” he said icily.

That council seat up for grabs in the interterm election to replace the dead councilor was important for only one reason. The council member that held it was more than a councilor. He or she was deputy mayor and worked side-by-side with the mayor. It was an old Barrian tradition in the southern and western sectors of the planet and put in place here for the same reason it had been in place there—to prevent the mayor from becoming a dictator.

The interterm election for mayor and the councilor had turned deadly and he was sure more death was to come. After all, Jarvis badly wanted to take control of this town, and if he won, that’s what he’d attempt to do.

At any rate, the jackass was just a pawn, and they’d use the mayor until his usefulness was over. Then, he was a dead man.

“Let’s get out of here,” Jarvis said. “I’ll call Alexa on the way and have her come up here.”

“She’s going to be invaluable in the ranks now that she’s a true believer,” Anthony said. “It’s too bad you can’t get rid of Landon.”

“Oh, I’ll be getting rid of him as soon as I take office. There will be no deputy mayor looking over my shoulder trying to keep me in check. This isn’t a two-man system anymore.”

  “Zan won’t go for that.”

“He won’t be able to stop it,” Jarvis muttered. “Dead men make no protests.” The men he had in place to steal the frezite from the Andron’s barn would make sure of that.

“He’s likable, so it might not be as easy as that.”

“It will happen, fast,” Jarvis told him. “We’re human and my first order of business is to get rid of those fucking freak cats and take over their land.” Jarvis’s phone rang and he stopped mid-stride to tug it from his pants pocket.

  “Who is it?”

Anthony’s own phone vibrated in his pocket and he removed it. He opened the message center.

“The results are in,” Jarvis told him. “Let’s go see if the FBI will be storming this place tomorrow.”

Jarvis had no intentions of allowing the freaks to continue running this town, destroying innocent lives with their backward alien concepts of sexuality, law, and morality. He didn’t intend to allow the alien offspring to keep breathing. They were all on a collision course with death, one way or another.

  Chapter One

Zannan Andron groaned as he pulled from the tight clasp of his lover’s ass. He lay back for a moment and then climbed out of bed. McCade Snow was a beauty, but he was also looking for something Zan knew he could never give.

He wanted a one-on-one romance with a little ménage on the side once in a while to spice things up. However, Zan was meant for a triad. It was a proven fact with his people that no one lover could ever meet all of their needs. He needed a woman to bear his children and a man’s silent strength.

It was too bad that man wouldn’t be Cade with his beautiful cerulean blue eyes. There was enough chemistry sizzling between them to power a small city, but there was no way this could go any further on Cade’s terms.

He’d put off getting involved with Cade for months even though the attraction had nearly been overpowering. He could fall for him so fast, but there was just no way for this to work.

“Zan,” Cade called as he headed for the bathroom.

“I can’t,” Zan said and his chest tightened. He pushed out a harsh breath. “It wouldn’t be right.” He removed the condom and cleaned away his juices before discarding the towel in a hamper and washing his hands.

Cade was sitting on the edge of the bed when he returned. “I know you’re fucking someone.”

“Almost always,” he commented wryly. He was the only unmarried member of his family left. Only one of them had a wife, which meant they’d be light on heirs.

So, it was his duty to take a woman to fulfill that part of his obligation to his family. His people had engaged in the practice from the dawn of Barria’s existence, his real home.

The planet was gone now, but this little town held its bloodlines. Ninety percent of the DNA was tainted with human blood, but his brothers had managed to find mates that carried strong genetic samples from their planet. So, his brother’s children would be more alien than human.

“Are you going to cheat on your mate?” Cade asked angrily.

“You think you’re a mate?” he demanded quietly as he reached for his khakis. He wouldn’t be surprised Cade was one of his mates. He hungered for him the way he
’d never craved a man, but it didn’t change reality. Cade had been educated with a human’s beliefs and values.

His beliefs were Barrian and his desire to see a small piece of his planet right here in this town was only growing each day. However, Zan knew there would be no peace if true Barrian law was instituted, so he was willing to settle for the version that might just come into being tonight if his brother’s mate won the election.

“I wouldn’t have one,” Zan said. “I’d have two of them.”

“I don’t understand this obsession you have to fuck women. What is it about them that’s so fantastic?” Cade came to his feet, hands clenched at his sides as he glared across the semi-dark bedroom.

Cade had an older brother who’d long since renounced this town and his family. He despised his alien genes. So, Cade had inherited everything when his parents passed away. This house was too big for one little man and Zan knew how lonely Cade was, but he couldn’t fix it the way Cade wanted him, too.

“It’s not an obsession,” Zan replied. “I enjoy women. They smell good and they feel good. Besides, since Rhys and Kel have male mates, it falls to me to take a female. Our family’s bloodlines depend on it.”

“I know about family duties,” he snapped. “I have a few of my own to adhere to, but that doesn’t change a single thing between us.”

“Does your family dictate you take a woman?”

“How else can the bloodline not end with me?” he muttered and ran a hand through his hair. “My brother wants nothing to do with our heritage. He won’t even take my calls anymore.”

“Then, what’s your problem?” Zan demanded, pulling on his T-shirt.
