  Passion’s Fire

Jaxon has loved Kelphan for a long time, and he’s known he was one of many. He was content to let Kel have his lovers since Jax couldn’t acknowledge their relationship openly. But he realizes he wants more. Still, Jaxon’s duty is to his family, to his faction.

Kel loves Jaxon, but his ex Zier has a hold on him he can’t shake. However, he would never ask Jaxon to accept Zier on a permanent basis. Besides, men on their planet have always taken women as their third.

Unable to do what he should, Jaxon demands a commitment from Kel, but Jaxon fears someone else has a claim on his man’s heart, too. Learning it’s Zier, a man he’s attracted as well, Jaxon decides they must give a triad relationship a chance. As he settles this in his heart, all hell is breaking loose around him, and the flames just might burn him alive.

  Chapter One

This was as close to a gentleman’s club as they were going to get here in small town Willow Brooke where some kinds of sex were still a dirty word. Before Breakers, which looked like a place for men to cut loose, play pool, and watch games on the flat screens, there had been no place here for gay men to meet.

Jaxon Dillon cut the engine of his royal blue convertible as he stared up at the two-story house out on the edge of town. The siding was a new touch and wide windows held a gentle glow which was dull in comparison to the fire sparking inside him.

He climbed out and cast a glance up at the silver flecks in the midnight blue sky. The moon glanced at him smiling brightly and his lips curled up at the edges. He hurriedly strode to the wide wraparound porch where the weathered, high-backed rockers lounged lazily.

He knocked on the front door and it was opened by a six-foot-six-inch tall man clad in a black suit with a red bowtie. The dark brown eyes were emotionless, but the man gave him a nod in greeting.

  “Jaxon,” he said.

“Max.” Jaxon nodded and walked past the bouncer into the entry.

“I told you, you weren’t welcome here,” he heard Max say coldly as he pulled the door closed blocking out the rest of the conversation.

Jaxon moved forward and the wood beneath his feet echoed his footsteps as he made his way through the house. His destination was the living room where the lights cast a soft glow over the crowd gathered there. He scanned for one face in particular as he silently thanked the man who’d conceived of this idea and the partners who’d gotten the house into shape.

Electricity danced along his fingertips as he rubbed his fingers along his throat, revealed by the open buttons. His lips tipped in a smile as he spied the reason he’d braved coming here again. He was carrying on a conversation with a great supporter of the ideas he was eager to bring to their town as the interim mayor. First Jaxon knew he had to get elected despite the odds against him.

He strode across the room stopping to talk to a few men on his way. Each step he took made his heart beat faster as it brought him closer to the man he’d been waiting all day to see.

Jaxon slid his hand up the center of the hard, straight back and felt the faintest shiver as his hand glided down to stroke over one butt cheek. His hand curved, shaping the flesh through the fabric of the jeans as he leaned up on tip-toe to kiss the side of his lover’s neck.

Just doing that made sparks of fire flare to life low in his belly. He rubbed against the side of his man as he moved to stand next to him.

  “Hey, baby,” Jaxon said,
leaning heavily into the hard body of his lover.

Kelphan Andron curved his arm around Jaxon’s narrow waist. He pulled him closer against him as he looked down at him with those beautiful gold eyes the color of tiger’s eye crystal. The heat smoldering in that gaze made Jaxon hard.

“Hey, sweetheart.” Kel gave him a smile that made Jaxon’s heart flip over, and Kel dipped his head. His lush lips brushed against Jaxon’s in a soft kiss. Kel gave Jaxon a warm smile that heated his blood.

Jaxon stroked Kel’s cheek. He still couldn’t believe he’d gotten so lucky. Kel didn’t just have beautiful eyes, he was six foot one and gorgeous with skin darkly tanned from hours of working outdoors. His body was hard, muscled. He was a man’s wet dream in the flesh, but tonight they had to have a very important talk about the woman in Kel’s life.

“We were just talking about you,” Zier Kezonite murmured, cutting into Jaxon’s thoughts. The blue-gray eyes on him were intense, and Jaxon was certain if he broke up with Kel tonight, Zier would be all over him tomorrow. “Are you up for this? Jarvis isn’t going to let you take over as mayor knowing you’re for everything Brad was for, and everything Jarvis despises.”

He knew the fight for interim mayor might well turn nasty. Willow Brooke had been founded by aliens over a hundred years ago, but not all the half-alien descendants wanted to turn this town into a replica of Barria. The planet was merely a name to most of them, but some of the elders in this town, including Jaxon’s grandfather, pure-bred Barrian, remembered well the ideals this town had been founded on. They wanted to see those principles realized finally.

He slid his arm through Kel’s. “Jarvis has some supporters,” Jaxon answered. “The election is going to come down to what the public wants most.”

“Then, I hope you’re up for the fight,” Zier said. “I also hope you aren’t just telling us what we want to hear. You mean what you say about the changes that will get us gays the same rights the men on Barria enjoyed. I’m tired of keeping my sexuality low-key and worrying about losing my job.”

“I mean it,” he said, more than conscious just how that alone would alter attitudes of the residents here. Gays and bisexuals had to keep their sex lives under the radar even though Kel’s older brother was openly living with a man and a woman. He looked up at Kel who winked at him.

“He’ll do fine,” Kel said. “You want to get some drinks or take a walk?”

Jaxon smiled, glad to be getting some private time with Kel. They had so few chances to be alone without prying eyes watching his every move. Zier was right. They needed to be able to love openly rather than having to hide for fear of losing their jobs. Those with the power typically didn’t think gay men were strong enough to handle stress or do a man’s work.

  He nodded. “Yeah.”

  “Later,” Kel said to Zier.

  “Kel?” Zier called.

  “Yeah?”

“We’ll talk later,” he said. “I need this settled.”

“I know,” Kel told him and gave him a tight smile that had Jaxon wondering what they’d really been talking about when he’d joined them.

Kel led him out the back door after they grabbed a couple of beers from the bar. “Nice night,” Kel commented, leaning against the low railing of the porch.

“What was that about?” Jaxon asked. “You and Zier?”

Kel looked at him and shook his head. “Just business.”

“What about it?” he asked. “He’s a teacher.”

Kel gave him an amused smirk. “Yeah, and he wants to bring his kids out to the orchard is that so wrong?”

“Oh.” He frowned, feeling like an ass, but more so because of suspicions he really had no right to have.

Kel set his glass on a nearby table. “What’s really on your mind, Jax?” Kel reached out to stroke Jaxon’s nape sending warm shivers of hunger through him and temporarily scrambling his brain.

Jaxon drew in a jagged breath. “I love when we touch,” he said softly. “Makes me so hot and I want to get serious with you,” he said.

Kel studied him with those enigmatic eyes for so long that Jaxon groaned. He never should have brought it up. What they had worked and didn’t require them to see each other every day. Their relationship put no restrictions on either of them sexually and was of minimal risk for Jaxon.

But he needed more. He was falling in love with Kel and wanted an exclusive relationship with him.

“What do you mean by serious?” Kel asked quietly.

“I want you to stop seeing Bria,” he said. Bria worked at the orchard and Kel took her out a few times a week.

“I told you, the thing with Bria isn’t serious,” he said. “It’s just a thing.”

Jaxon leaned closer to Kel. “I hate it though, and I hate not being able to do this in public.” He kissed Kel’s jaw and snuggled against him. “This campaign isn’t making things much easier. I’m going to have to be even more careful about what I do and say.”

“We’ll get through it,” Kel murmured, caressing Jaxon’s back.

Jaxon reached up and pulled Kel’s head down to his, electricity danced on his fingers and Jaxon was glad Kel couldn’t see what he did to him. He’d think he was a freak. “You want to take me upstairs?” Kel kissed him and Jaxon melted into him with a soft sigh. “I really need you, baby.” He pressed a kiss to Kel’s bottom lip and then sucked.

Kel tugged Jaxon into his arms, devouring him. Jaxon pushed his fingers into the back of Kel’s short dark hair. He strained closer needing the warmth and the strength of the arms holding him. He wanted to just take Kel home with him and cuddle up in bed and make love all night.

  “Kel,” Jaxon moaned softly.

Kel’s lips skimmed over his throat while his hands pulled Jaxon’s shirt from the waistband of his pants. Jaxon breathed raggedly and felt the strength of his power rising in him. It loved Kel and was getting harder to control around him which was a dangerous thing because if he lost control, he could kill the man he loved most. That didn’t stop him from wanting to coat him in his electricity, mark him so every other man and woman would know he was taken.

Kel’s hands moved over his skin, and Jaxon moaned softly. His blood was electrified and caused a fine sheen of sweat to dampen his brow. Damn he needed Kel’s touch so bad. He ached for it if he went too long without it.

He gripped the front of Kel’s shirt as sharp teeth teased the flesh at his throat. He sucked hard and Jaxon whimpered. “Oh baby. I love how you tease me.”

Kel lifted his head and looked past him. “Shit.” He pulled away from Jaxon. “Who let you in here?”

“Oh my God!” Jaxon tensed. The reporters were always trying to sneak in and find out what really went on in Breakers. He was going to be front and center news by nine tomorrow morning.

“Doesn’t matter who let me in,” Daniel Dates said, sneering at them. “Your little boy toy can forget about being mayor. Those fucked-up-ass changes are never going to happen now.”

“Give me the phone,” Kel snapped, striding toward him.

“Stay away from me,” Daniel snarled as he shoved his phone in the pocket of his pants. “I can see where your hands have been.”

Kel grabbed him when he tripped over his own feet as Daniel tried to escape. “I’m going to beat some sense into you.” He threw him against the wall of the house and tried to grab the phone.

Daniel punched him in the jaw and Kel grunted and punched him back before wrestling the phone from him.

“Son of a bitch!” Daniel screamed. “Give me that.”

Kel glared at him. “Why would I do that?”

“The footage is already uploaded to a server,” Daniel snapped. “You can’t stop the destruction that I’ll be able to wreak with that. You two will be the hottest thing on the morning news around here. You’ll be lucky if I don’t send it to a porn site.”

Kel threw the phone into the side of the house and it smashed to the ground in pieces.

  “You asshole! You
re gonna pay for that,” Daniel snapped.

“Who gives a damn?” Kel retorted. “Have them bill me for your new one, and get something flashier than that cheap hunk of junk.”

Daniel glared mutinously at the taunt. “You didn’t stop anything,” Daniel said through clenched teeth. “We’re not going to allow you queers and bi-queers to take over this town. Either you back down and go back to your closet or the feds will know you and your brothers are aliens. It won’t stop there. Those freaking abominations, the cats, will be named as aliens too. You have one week to withdraw from the race, Jaxon, if you don’t, this town will be crawling with feds ready to study your boyfriend.” He backed up.

“I swear if you open your mouth about us, I’ll kill you myself,” Kel snarled at him.

“You just try it.” He pointed at Kel. “See what happens. I’m not the only one against alienizing our town.”

“Let it go, Kel,” Jaxon muttered putting a hand on Kel as he took a step toward the now retreating Daniel. He pushed out a rough breath and ran a trembling hand over his hair. “Shit.”

“We won’t let the feds take us,” Kel said quietly, his voice thrumming with rage. “Those humans nearly killed us before. We had to scatter and chances are me and my brothers are all that’s left of pure-blood Barrians. Well, almost all.”

Jaxon shook his head. “Never say that out loud,” he said softly. “No one can know my family consists of some of the original guardians of this town. You know they’d be hunted, I’d be hunted just like you.”

“I didn’t know it was true until just now,” Kel told him.

“Kel.” He hissed at him. “You bastard. You tricked me.”

“Stop freaking out,” Kel ordered. “I’m not going to tell anyone, but we do have a minor problem here. If Daniel and some of the others are serious, the feds are going to be back here crawling all over this town.”
